Interview with Carole 01

Age at interview: 50 years
Sex: Female
Background:
Carole is 50 years old and has Down's syndrome. She lives with her sister Hillarie. Carole partakes in a wide range of events and activities that involve cooking, reading and discussing newspapers, historical events and the making of 'super Yorkshire puddings!' She works three days per week at a cooking club and one day a week as a teacher assistant for a primary school in Newcastle.

The following is a transcript of the entire interview with Carole.

Okay, Carole, can you tell me where you go to work and what you do?
 

Carole: I have had working at Park Head Unit with Angela Foster and everybody at the cooking club and History and Oliver is cooking and all sorts.

Interviewer: You do quite a lot of cooking?...

Carole: Yes, a lot, cooking first, then after that we do cleaning and washing.

Interviewer: And who do you do all the cooking for?

Carole: Shirley is marvellous. She is a key worker. Shirley is taking over.

How many people are there?
 

Carole: Angela, Jill, Sandy, Jennifer, Nicola, Janet and Michael. They serve hot tea in big cups and put them away down there and washing up.

Interviewer: And how do you get there in the morning?

Carole: I have Ray driving at Park Head.

Interviewer: Does he pick you up?

Carole: Oh yes. He is driving. Ray is marvellous driving. Ray is away in Berwick.

Interviewer: So you stay there all day. And is it all hard work?

Carole: Yes, hard work. Lots I think.

Interviewer: So do you have good fun there as well?

Carole: Oh yes.

So what do you do when you come back from work?
 

Carole: I'm on the bus. When it's cold I take the bus.

Interviewer: Do you get home first?

Carole: Others first. I go last.

Interviewer: You get off the bus last. But do you get in the house before Hilarie comes home?

Carole: Oh yes, yes. She is a teacher at Newcastle.

Interviewer: And when you get home who makes your tea? Do you make it or...

Carole: I do it. Sometimes. (laughs).

Hilarie: She makes a cup of tea.

Carole: Yes.

Interviewer: Who makes the dinner?

Carole: Over there look! (nods at Hilarie)

Interviewer: Hilarie does that. But you're good at making cups of tea, I've tried it, it's good.

Carole: Oh yes. I do teas and coffees.

And what do you like doing in the evening?
 

Carole: Evening is sitting watching telly at East Enders. Les is getting married soon. You know East Enders - Pauline is organizing the church, and then they married last week - the wedding...

Interviewer: Right... What other programmes do you like?

Carole: The other telly is - I watched a big fire on telly. On the telly - tell us what's happened. The windows and doors - there's a big fire.

Interviewer: You saw that on the news?

Carole: Yes I saw it on the news. Tell us what's happened. There's a car burned.

Interviewer: Yes. It's because it's hot and it's windy.

Carole: Yes. The news is first and then the ads.

Interviewer: Anything else you like on telly?

Carole: Yes, lots.
