Koysor, tell me how old you are and who you live with? |
| |
I am going to be 31 in September, and I live with my mum and my sister and my brother in law and four children. |
| |
Can you describe what your physical problems are? |
| |
Spina bifida. It's a curvature of the spine. I'm paralysed from the waist down. I have no feeling from the waist down and I have also got hydrocephalus as well which is part of my condition and the hydrocephalus means that there is pressure on the brain. I have got two shunts in my head which prevent me from getting headaches, severe headaches if both blocked up there's a danger of me not recovering from them. I have had that many operations over the last twenty years I have had two put in, whereas before I only had one. |
| |
When did you have the first one put in? |
| |
The first one was put in when I was born and the second one was put in twenty years old. So I've now got two in place of one that prevent me from getting severe headaches. I had bad headaches, where I was hospitalised as well. |
| |
And does that work? You don't get headaches? |
| |
No, not as bad now. No. |
| |
Tell me what it is like having to use a wheelchair and not being able to get around on your legs all the time? |
| |
It's hard. Very hard. I keep, I mean I've just been involved in a wedding, but I couldn't exactly do the things that my brothers were doing. The bride and groom, my niece and nephew, I couldn't exactly get out, take them out the car, put them in the car, whereas two of my brothers walked me to the car whereas I couldn't do that and I felt as though I did really bad. I have actually seen the video and I keep thinking 'I should have been doing that'. |
| |
So it's difficult to come to terms with even now? |
| |
Yes. Some of the things. I mean, I cannot, I mean I've been away to Bangladesh twice, to my native country and I've come back here. I can't even stay over there for as long as I want. I come back here because of my condition. Plus the weather doesn't suit me over there.
| |
Have you got a lot of family over there? |
| |
Yes. Nieces, nephews, everything, just family everywhere. I have got a lot of family over there. |
